Back before there were fiberglass skateboards, helmets, and body padding, were the simple days of wooden skateboards. This is the true mark of skill because it all came from inside of you, we were tough! You couldn't rely upon modern technology to cushion the blows dealt out harshly when you flew head first into the pavement or skidded across the sidewalk on your knees and elbows! I had a hot little red number, a PF Flyer (PF standing for pretty fine). It gave me hours of joy and freedom as I whizzed down the street with the wind in my hair, I was alive!

There came one fateful day, one that changed my life permanently. My friends and I were racing up and down hills almost vertical to the ground, with tumble weeds and rocks as big as a volleyball that we would dart in and out of still coming out alive with a record score. It was a blistering hot day and it was the day of, "The Great Race." The best of the best were there, three boys and two of us girls. We chose "suicide run" as the place for this great race and we were sure there would never be another like it! Two of the nighborhood kidscame out to cheer us on, my little brother and my best friend's little brother. She promised the boys popsicles if they would cheer louder for us!

We all got to the top of the course looking at the ant hills, mole hills, barbwire, and the usual pebbles, glass, twigs, and cracks found on most sidewalks that needed repairing. THere was Big Red on his Grand Central $3.98 special with extra ball bearings. Dippy Dave and his $5.95 Penny's special. (He was one of the rich kids on the block.) Big Red's brother, little Red with his $2.98 Grand Central special without the extra ball bearings. Becky and her $3.98 Grand Central special, and last but not least, me with my Grand Central bargain basement 98 cent special. (Only used six months prior to the Great Race!)

We were all lined up, waiting for the cap gun to go off. Pop!! We were off! Slowly we gained speed. 1 mph, 3 mph, 5 mph, 10 mph...I was out in the lead with Big Red and he was hot on m wheels. Dippy Dave came next, followed closely by the other two. I made it past the barb wire and the glass, the rocks came out of no where, but I seemed unbeatable with Big Red fighting to push me out of first.

We got to the moguls, I was halfway into them, the wind in my hair. I knew I was going to win! All of a sudden, my skateboard broke in half! I just stood there stunned! I said , "Self, if I remember Big Red was hot on your wheels!" All of a sudden I heard a big crash and a few choice words. I looked over realizing I was still in one piece, but Big Red had run into the tree to avoid hitting me. Then one right after the other there was a four-person skateboard pile-up. Luckily Big Red had a hard head and only sustained a huge lump on his head rendering him unconscious for a few minutes. It didn't take him long to recover. The rest of the skateboarders had minor skin abrasions and as for the winner, well...I was, because I was the only one standing. I left skate boarding at a good time, holding the winning record and besides, I couldn't afford another skateboard!

Wendy M.
